In 1876 the Swiss Daniel Peter
wanted to make chocolate smoother by adding milk. But chocolate -- being fatty -- won't mix
with water. Peter's idea took off when he met Henri Nestle, who had perfected the manufacture
of condensed milk (no water). Nestle and Peter mixed milk solids and chocolate to make the
world's first milk chocolate. The Nestle company was born.
